Ingredients

  • 1 sheet cold puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 beaten egg yolk (for egg wash)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for drizzle, optional)
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (for drizzle, optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Roll out your puff pastry on a lightly floured surface until about 1/8 inch thick.
  • Cut the pastry into squares, approximately 4 inches each.
  • In a bowl, mix cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest until combined.
  • Spoon a generous dollop of the cream cheese mixture onto the center of each pastry square.
  • Fold the corners of each pastry square over the filling, pinching the edges to seal.
  • Place each danish on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them about an inch apart.
  • Brush the tops with beaten egg yolk.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until puffed and golden.
  • Let cool before drizzling with a mixture of powdered sugar and milk.

Notes

Chill puff pastry before working with it to keep it from becoming too soft. Use room temperature cream cheese for a smoother filling. These can be made ahead and frozen unbaked.
