Ingredients
  

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add food coloring and vanilla extract.
  • Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk until smooth.
  • Chill the dough in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
  • Roll out the chilled dough to about ¼-inch thickness on a floured surface.
  • Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are set but centers are soft.
  • Cool for 5 minutes on the sheets before transferring to a wire rack. Frost with cream cheese frosting when cool.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for better incorporation. Don't skip chilling the dough to maintain cookie shape. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
