  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • Food coloring (red, green, black)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet ingredients to form a dough.
  • Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick and use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  • Place cookies on baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Prepare royal icing by mixing powdered sugar and water until smooth, then color with food coloring.
  • Decorate cooled cookies with royal icing and let dry completely.
